GR20: Introduction

The GR20 is a long distance footpath that traverse the Corsican mountains from Calenza to Conca. It is the toughest GR in France. A very good condition is necessary and you shouldn't be afraid of heights when passing the Cirque du Solitude. Between Calenzana and Vizavona - in our case a nine days walk - the route only crosses one paved road. The landscape the route crosses, is very variated and green. The route is mountainous, resulting a much climbing and descending. The entire route counts 179 km divided in 15 stages.
In general the route is very well marked. There are enough refuges along the route, only the number of beds per refuge are very limited. Since you can't make any reservations, it is recomended to carry your tent that you can pitch near each refuge.
Summer and autumn are the most beloved seasons to walk the route. In spring a large part of the middle mountain are still covered with snow. Since in summer the route is very crowded and in autumn the daytime is shortening, we decided to do the route in June.
