Great Glen Way: Introduction

The Great Glen Way is a relatively new long distance footpath, that is opened in April 2002. It runs from Fort William, the capital of the West Highlands to Inverness over a distance of 117 km (77 miles) along the Great Glen Fault. The glen holds many deep and mysterious lochs. The most famous of them is Loch Ness, that extends over onethird of the Gleat Glen's lenght and dominates the nothern half of the way. The other less famous lochs along which bank the way runs, are Loch Lochy and Loch Oichy, the smallest and least deep of the three lochs. Next to the lochs the Great Glen also holds the Caladonian Canal. The canal was built in the nineteenth century to link the many lochs with the sea, enabling vessels to avoid the hazardous sea voyage around the north of Scotland.
