Hydrothermal gasification of biomass in supercritical water

CowWithin the framework of the course Pilot Plant Design a pilot plant was designed in a team of two chemical engineers, a chemist and a mechanical engineer. The plant had to be capable of gasifying 5 kg biomass per hour. The biomass had to consist of a mixture of wood and manure, resulting in a dry matter percentage of 30.

The plant had to be operated under supercritical conditions and was therefore designed for an operating pressure up to 600 bar and a temperature up to 700 °C. Glucose was used as model component for the reaction kinetics.
